Subject: Iraq: 'No Mea Culpa From The British Media'
Dear Stephen Glover,
Hope you're well.
Thank you for your article in the Independent on Sunday about the failure of
the British press to "come clean about its mistakes in Iraq." [1].
If you haven't seen it, you might be interested to read the 3-part Media
Alert, titled 'No Mea Culpa From The British Media', which we did on this
very topic back in 2004:
Part 1: http://www.medialens.org/alerts/04/040902_No_Mea_Culpa.HTM
Part 2: http://www.medialens.org/alerts/04/040907_No_Mea_Culpa_2.HTM
Part 3: http://www.medialens.org/alerts/04/040915_No_Mea_Culpa_3.HTM
Part 2 may be of particular interest. When we asked Michael Williams, then
IoS deputy editor, about the failings of his own paper on Iraq, he answered:
"You will appreciate that we are journalists here producing a small
newspaper which endeavours to cover everything from the weather to the
crossword to the daily news to a full sports and arts agenda. You misread us
if you think we are engaged in a process of dialectics!"
Might this be worth pursuing perhaps? It's not just the Sun, the Times and
the Telegraph that misled their readers. Shouldn't the Independent, IoS,
Observer and Guardian apologise to their readers too? The above links will
give you ample evidence of their failings, as will the Media Lens book,
'Guardians of Power'.
Please feel free to get in touch.
Best wishes
