RE: For all the grand rhetoric, we have failed to see through our mission in Afghanistan

You made a fair statement that US/UK policy in Afghanistan has amounted to a "cynical betrayal". You said that "unpleasant" warlords "rule with a brutality that would have rivalled even the Taliban." True again, but if they are comparable to the Taliban shouldn't they be described as "murderous" rather than "unpleasant".

These murderous warlords (you mentioned General Dostum and Ismail Khan ) are in fact key US allies in Afghanistan and are also officials in Karzai's government. The AP reported on a meeting between Donald Rumsfeld and two major warlords, Dostum and Atta Mohamed:

"Rumsfeld, making his fourth trip to Afghanistan since the Taliban's
fall, met for the first time with northern Afghanistan's two major
warlords, welcoming them warmly." [1]

In November 2002, Daria Fane, the U.S. State Department's coordinator for Afghanistan Women's Issues said, "It is better to have warlords in the government rather than outside, causing mayhem."[2]

On April 27, 2002, U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld praised warlord Ismail Khan as an "appealing person, thoughtful, measured and self-confident."[3]

The Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan, RAWA, the most widely respected anti-fundamentalist organisation in Afghanistan, recently noted

"...different countries of the world are promising to
give 8 billion dollars in aid, and on the other hand Mr.Karzai is
considering the appointment of the dirtiest elements of Jehadis to
important government posts as his most important task. Meanwhile they
get themselves ready to loot the billions of coming dollars" [4]

You should have called for the US and UK to sever their ties with the warlords. It is the main element of the "cynical betrayal".
