Post Post subject: Theatre Reviews Reply with quote

I take the EDP every day and am becoming more and more insulted by the quality of the Theatre Reviews. Having been a theatre reviewer in Essex in the 70s I know the pressures and the pitfalls. We now seem to have a plethora of reviewers who seem only able to
a) tell the story of the paly
b) relate it in some way to film or TV
Where is the constructive criticism;the awareness of staging, lighting and sound effects;the quality of the acting etc?
We were spoilt by having Charles Roberts as reviewer for many years. He was a man of the theatre; his reviews were scholarly and informed.
How many of these new reviewers have ever seen a West End play,or read the reviews of Charles Spencer or Benedict Nightingale?
