In July 1937, after a series of skirmishes outside Peking, Japan - Asia's greatest power in the 1930s - declared war on China. In the following years, as Britain and America gave support to the Chinese, Japan began to see such moves as acts of aggression, a mind-set that led to the attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941. The world would never be the same again. Using extracts from diaries, individual testimonies and home-movie recordings - which include previously unseen colour footage of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the invasion of Singapore and the battle for the Pacific - tonight's documentary explores how the global events of the Second World War affected the Japanese, events that culminated in the dropping of atom bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

It will be interesting to hear the case of the atomic bombs and their justification or otherwise.
