RE: Chavez opponents get last chance to force referendum: May 29, 2004

Mr. Gunson:

You refer to Chavez as an "increasingly authoritarian" president.
The opposition, after a staging a coup (applauded by the US) in which they imposed dictatorial rule and murdered scores of Chavez supporters yet largely avoided prosecution, then shutting down the nation's most important industry for months, and waging a non-stop campaign against Chavez in the private media, now wins a referendum - provided for in a constitution they opposed. The opposition has also received hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding from the US through the NED (National Endowment for democracy). [1] Why is none of this unflattering background on the opposition provided in your report?

I shudder to think how such a foreign funded opposition would be dealt with in Britain or the US. Guantanamo comes to mind. I look forward to articles in which you describe Bush and Blair as "increasingly authoritarian" as they wage their "war on terror".

The opposition has produced evidence that public sector employees have been intimidated to withdraw their signatures. The government has also produced evidence that private sector employers have pressured workers to sign the recall petition. [2] Why do you only mention the opposition's accusations and report them as undisputed fact: "opposition voters are being threatened with the sack and denied everything from government contracts to passports and identity documents."

As in Haiti, journalists eagerly demonize a democratic government that Washington wants to be rid of.

Mr. Kelner:

Former US president Jimmy Carter and the OAS both conceded the victory of Hugo Chavez in Sunday's recall referendum. The opposition stubbornly insists Chavez won by fraud. Below is an excerpt from a recent commentary by Justin Podur who is reporting from Venezuela that deals with a much more credible and widespread example of fraud.

"Speaking of fraud, the UK Independents reporter Hannah Baldock seems to have violated Venezuelan law, using the opposition's phony exit polls to declare a Chavez loss early on Sunday. The article seems to have been quietly removed from the Independent's website, but the NarcoNews team did a dissection of the piece (see here:

http://narcosphere.narconews.com/story/2004/8/15/205259/595#1) that includes Baldock's figures: she cites "mid-morning results" (from where?) that "showed that the opposition, already boasting an enormous 1,758,000 votes to Chavez's 798,000, is well on its way to reaching the target of 3.76 million votes it needs to oust the authoritarian, left-wing President."

( The Venezuelan Referendum Ends by Justin Podur:

Once again the Independent reveals what an integral part of the propaganda system it is.
