RE: Taking rights seriously : Leader May 13, 2004

You say that "It appears to be true, as Tony Blair told the Commons yesterday, that abuse by British troops was neither widespread nor typical. It also appears that abuse, once highlighted, has been addressed and ended" A recent report by Amnesty International does not support this conclusion. AI reported that "In several cases documented by Amnesty International, UK soldiers opened fire and killed Iraqi civilians in circumstances where there was apparently no imminent threat of death or serious injury to themselves or others." It went on to say that "Despite this, the British Army has not even opened an investigation into many cases where civilians have been killed by UK forces in Iraq. Where investigations have been opened, the British Royal Military Police (RMP), which is responsible for conducting the investigations, has been highly secretive and has provided families with little or no information about the progress or conclusions of investigations." [1]

When will you stop taking governmnet assertions at face value? Weren't the bogus claims about Iraqi WMD enough to make you sceptical?

Your more general claim that "The Labour government has, in many important respects, a very good record on human rights" is even more outlandish. Putting aside Britains complicity with the ongoing slaughter in Iraq, Britain is second only to the US in arms exports. As Mark Curtis documented in his "Web of Deceit", Blair's regime enthusiastically arms murderous governments.

But you canīt really blame Mr. Blair for not highlighing these facts.

Otherwise, he might have to go on the dole.
