Re: A Nuclear 9/11 - March 9 2004 - http://www.nytimes.com/2004/03/10/opinion/10KRIS.html

It beats me, Nicholas, how you could write an article on anti-proliferation and ignore what the entire third world, and particularly the Muslim world, rightfully key in on.

How can the US claim leadership in anti-proliferation when it is the world's chief proliferator - and the only nation ramping up for a one nation arms race in space? "Finally, there's the real rogue nation of proliferation, Pakistan." In fact, that nation would be the US, whose appetite for nuclear weapons is once again finding expression through the Bush administration.

Israel, with the direct involvement of the US, is the only nuclear power in the Middle East and is dangerous and paranoid enough to use its warheads. Some estimate that it has between 2 and 4 hundred nuclear warheads. Detooth that little baby and maybe you could get a few of the Muslim nations to actually listen. Keep this off the agenda and the US will receive the contempt of those who know hypocrisy and lack of credibility when they see it.

Given that the 'anti-proliferators' are chiefly the proliferators or at minimum safely within the club, doesn't your whole article sort of fall into irrelevance? Not a mention of self-restraint, of an obligation to lead the way and disarm, of openly addressing the problem of Israel as a nuclear threat; just a series of admonitions to lean on this regime, lean on that regime. If this is how a NYT columnist more liberal than the current administration thinks, no wonder the world is simply ignoring the United States these days. You've gotta walk the talk. Somehow the US has disastrously forgotten how to set the example.

Kind regards

David

Very true.

And by now it is probably over 6 (as opposed to between 2 and 4).
