Post Post subject: Exchange with Monbiot RE Leftwing "Genocide Belittlers& Reply with quote

RE: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/jun/13/left-and-libertarian-right?commentpage=all

In response to my question about why Monbiot singled out Medialens among the "genocide belittlers" but exempted Znet, Monbiot wrote

Dear Joe,

Here is what I said about Medialens in its entirety:

"The leftwing website Media Lens maintained that Herman and Peterson were
"perfectly entitled" to talk down the numbers killed at Srebrenica. What
makes this all the more remarkable is that Media Lens has waged a long and
fierce campaign against Iraq Body Count for underestimating the number
killed in that country."

Now please explain why it is wrong to spend two sentences mentioning that
astonishing double standard?

George

George,

1) Medialens already commented: “What does 'talk down' really mean here? Downplay? Underestimate? Deliberately underestimate? Dishonestly underestimate?

In fact, last week we spelled out our position to Monbiot on Twitter:

'We're saying +everyone+ is entitled to debate facts. Who are we, or you, to say they are not? Do you possess Absolute Truth?' Imagine how it would have looked for him, if he had honestly represented our position:

'The leftwing website Media Lens maintained that Herman and Peterson were "perfectly entitled" to debate the numbers killed at Srebrenica.'

Do you disagree?

2) It is not a “double standard” to focus much more attention on crimes for which we (Westerners) are most responsible than on the crimes of official enemies. It is applying a single – and quite defensible – standard: focus most on what you are most responsible for and are in the best position to do something about.
Had you been honest you would have written

“The leftwing website Media Lens maintained that Herman and Peterson were ‘perfectly entitled’ to debate the numbers killed at Srebrenica.' However, Medialnes has not written anything more about Srebrenica because it believes a higher priority must be placed on crimes they believe (as Westerners) they are most responsible for and can do the most about – like the war in Iraq.”

You should publicly apologize not only to Medialens – but to Ed Herman, Chomsky and Pilger for your disgraceful article.

Joe Emersberger

PS: The “fierce campaign” against IBC was a very open, public and detailed debate about the death toll in Iraq. Such a debate would never be hosted by your employer. Instead, it was hosted on a website with a minuscule budget compared to the Guardian’s. Think about what that means.
