If Gordon Brown lost his eye in a school rugby match, then this is what can happen in school PE. Then PE is dangerous on a scale of permanent injury to children's sensory organs + causing disability.

The recent story about the collapsed rugby scrum and the paralysed player wanting euthanasia proves the same thing.

Are we hearing a peep in any media about the pros and cons of compulsory PE, accompanying stories like these?

In an era that is hysterical about child protection, this is an extremely curious one to miss. The public must be made to assume that forcing activities onto unwilling children that that can cost them their sight is necessary to keep them fit. Obseity is a terrible risk but blindness is not !
