I can be as lofty as I like about never taking any notice of the Sun, but you are innocent of supporting it if its headlines blast their way into your eyes while you are looking at other papers. Eh?

Yesterday's headline claim to have a secret tape of Paul Burrell admitting lying in the Diana inquest. Everyone in Scotland at least, must notice this is exactly the same as its claim in 2006 to have a secret tape of Tommy Sheridan admitting lying in the libel case he won against the Sun's owner.
Sheridan, in case anyone doesn't know, is leader of the left wing Solidarity Party formed when the case caused a split in the Scottish Socialist Party which he also was the first leader of. Its advance in the 2003 election despite the BBC blatantly leaving it out of hustings shows, gave the system + the Sun an obvious motive to want to get Sheridan.

As his party website explained at the time, tapes like this are easy to fake using mimicked voice intonation.

It is not wholly clear why they want to get Burrell, unless it's revenge for his books exposing the personal ruthlesssness of the palace mafia around the royals? But they obviously are testing whether they can get him by this trick. So how convincing is it that the same paper, already with no reputation for honesty, can produce secret tapes twice, of 2 different folks it wants to get?

How many repeats of this trick before the public see through it? 2 is surely enough, but readers outside Scotland might not be aware that there have been 2.

Yes, why do they want to get Burrel. It might be important.

Post Post subject: SSP Reply with quote

The footage of Tommy Sheridan came from his best man at his wedding setting him up for political reasons. The split of the SSP was an implosion. I don't like Tommy but his mum is lovely and I think it was shamfeul the way someones sex life can be made an issue in 21st century politics.

Tommy was seen by many anarchists as being dangerous because he was a name with lungs - he was a well-known and unique politician who could belt out a speech without need of amplification. In truth, if Sheridan was only interested in power then he would be more likely to have joined the Labour party rather than putting in the years of legwork building up an alternative. He has either embarrassed himself on that video lying to McNeilage - who Sheridan had good reason not to trust , or he is telling the truth on the video, or the video is a fake. But in each option perhaps the most damaging thing for Sheridan is that he chose a best man who would go on to betray him to Rupert Murdoch for any reason.

I don't believe it is an MI5 fake - McNeilage could have faked it himself. I do strongly believe that activists of every persuasion are being targetted primarily by spurious and unjust legal actions, orchestrated character assasination, physical abuse and a increasing level of infiltration by agents whose task isn't only to leak information, it is to earn enough trust to cause disruption by creating and then directing discord. It's not just the SSP that failed to weather this onslaught, it applies to activist groups and even dissenting newspapers.

Yes obviously the point is always not 'Is this true?' but 'Why are they telling us this?'
