Post Post subject: Video Links Thread (and some audio too) Reply with quote

unsurprisingly this is a thread for dumping video links in. (or sites that host alot of documentaries/clips etc)

i`ll start off with some. (in no particular order, please post if some links are broken/dead, i have not watched some of these for a while so they may have been moved or removed since then, hopefully not)

(i notice that "the fog of war" with macnamara has been taken off google video recently, as has manufacturing consent and plan colombia, this annoying, i have found alternatives for manufacturing consent but not for fog or war or plan colombia, i`ll have another look soon, i didnt try youtube for one thing)

LATIN AMERICA (sadly lacking plan colombia)

Life and Debt (a docu about world trade and globalization using jamaica as case study)

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/

EDIT: forgot a quite obvious one, democracy now (great for upto date news from a humane point of view)

http://www.democracynow.org/index.shtml

plus google video and youtube of course being the most popular free video servers, there are others too (google video being better for documentaries and it has a better search engine, youtube is good for music and stuff and does have good stuff on there but its search function is a bit rubbish plus their servers are filled up with purile tosh that you have to sift through to get to anything decent, partly because noone seems to understand how to use tags, dont get me started)

EDIT: just to add some more about youtube, there is a great variety of stuff on there and some of its really good/rare etc etc plus the community spirit of it is a nice feature. (im not into that 10minute rule though, i like to get off the office chair and sit of the sofa with a nice cuppa, not get up every ten minutes to select files, i should probably learn how to put the files into a playlist or something, its a bit of a nause to have to do that though, oh well no one said life was easy eh)

also try yahoo and alta vistas video search engines (they are the same but show results differently), useful for turning up stuff if you cant find it on google video and youtube and the others

hopefully the first post of many in this videos thread, dump those links people Smile

approaching anthropology

can only find a "trailer" at the moment, but would recommend this as an interesting film about part of the southern [usa] cultural matrix, hopefully someone will eventually post a bit more of the film - business. anyway its not a factual study, or pretence of one, but is quite interesting, especially from an outsiders perspective - subject to certain types of stereotype attack.

searching for the wrong eyed jesus
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aV5hezwCl8Q

theres also this one, i noticed which is a more recognised subcultural brand: hold on ill go find it.... here it is

the documentary - the game
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AE4l99O9ZyQ

i havent posted them as comparisons, though both involve music and essentially a monoracial setting.

however i think theyre worth looking at in terms of promotion of subcultural identity and the territory of said assumed identity ...amongst other things. especially in the era of exporting of democratic values, and disarming of militias[joke], might be interesting to consider which countries would welcome the import of these two examples of cultural matrices.... amongst other things.

sorry theyre not deep analysis - ill find some over the weeks.

all the best,sir jay

approaching greymatter

heres a site with quite a few interviews with persons trained, and perhaps excelling, in various disciplines of academia. i'm not presenting them as persons or arguments to be believed, as always there is a degree of "selling comprehension" going on, but theres some stuff for the old grey matter in there.

i havnt looked at the whole site, not sure if its for me, but the video interviews are interesting.

many of the subjects have phds or professorships behind them. the interviews range from sociobiology to evolutionary spychology to matters of concern to religion and philosophy.

its here:

http://meaningoflife.tv/

hopefully, these documentary type vids from intellectual trendsetters will increase in open access availability over the years.

[also available individually on utube thingy]

in each vid they usually mention a few books the subject has put together and so serve as a good introduction to the fields.

hope its useful

all the best, sir jay

After Downing Street: The Video

(got this link from a post in the MB, cheers)

http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/node/13798

(After Downing Street are an american group trying to impeach bush using the downing street memo as justification)

(thanks for the link to that docu "the game" jay, illuminating to hear those gang members talk about the old days when things were more organised etc, it made me think "no justice no peace"....social justice in this case, also that alot of these gangs are now more mafia like in terms of their political orientation compared to their predecessors,......re the meaning of life tv, i seen a few of those on google video before, the daniel dennet, john maynard smith and steven pinker ones, interesting stuff)

EDIT: oh and i totally agree about increasing access to university or lecture material via the web. (so many lectures go into the ether so to speak, much more should be videoed and distributed, UCTV is setting the trend..)

spotted this on the POV board..(thanks to g33kthug for uploading it)

Dinner With Portillo.

(g33kthugs text copied from the POV board, hope he doesnt mind)

Last night BBC4 repeated the 2003 broadcast of Dinner With Portillo featuring Benazir Bhutto, George Galloway, Jean-Pierre Langellier, Robert McGeehan, Rosemary Righter, Jackie Ashley and Rana Kabbani.

Watch Galloway take McGeehan to task for US support of dictatorships (including Pakistan while Bhutto looks on) and Rana Kabbani making some very accurate predictions.

a few weeks ago made a folder/bookmark etc to do with docus etc to go with the post:

"you cant blame the youth"
http://www.medialens.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1698

cos thats my main motive, in terms of collecting links. would of thought the m/l crew were familiar with the arguments, and although its nice/useful to archive for self and like minders, the way and rate that history is [written/rewritten] these days its good to have a place to refer someone to some A1 links......

ended up with a lot of the ones you and others posted on the m/b, a couple ive found so far:

War, Geopolitics, and History
Noam Chomsky, professor, linguistics, MIT
Robert Fisk, correspondent, The Independent
http://forum.wgbh.org/wgbh/forum.php?lecture_id=3076

and

Christopher Hitchens debates George Galloway
Christopher Hitchens debates George Galloway at Baruch College.
http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=6804714963382152969&q=george+galloway

maybe thats what channel4 should have been doing, or at least have available -seems they missed the boat.

on the lectures thing, my reasoning is here, excuse the fact im a techno neanderthal - which shows up in the approach.
http://realitystructure.blogspot.com/2005/12/key-stage-gcse-why-not-post-doctoral.html

raoul has some posts to do with sorting the media out/redesigning useful media too, eg
http://www.medialens.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1082
and[edit]
http://www.medialens.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=728&highlight=

and dan in terms of subject matters begging documentary eg "toast/ recommended reading" etc
http://www.medialens.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1278

in fact, when you look at the forum posts[easier than m/b cos they stay still to some degree], "thats gotta be a growth industry , right now!"[semi joke]

all the best, sir jay
