Published on 23 September 2004 in the EDP I think.

Anyone have any thoughts?

The continuing disorder in Iraq is now leading to further calls for military withdrawal.

But the stupidity and evil in doing that ought to be obvious.

Do such advocates seriously suppose that such a retreat and abandonment would be beneficial to Iraq and its people?

How can they, when it would utterly sink the effort to create a viable democracy in which people can have the elementary civil liberties we take for granted, and deliver the country to the less than tender mercies of Moqtada al Sadr or al-Zarqawi?

The latter - who has now apparently been personally involved in at least five executions of captives shown on video - regards the Taliban as liberal softies and enforces his will with the sadism of Saddam Hussein.

He and his henchmen are in control of much of Fallujah, and they have chillingly stated that they want to do for the rest of Iraq what they have already achieved in that benighted city.

The signs are that the US military is gearing up - with the consent of Mr Allawi - for a final showdown with al-Zarqawi.

A massive assault on Fallujah is being prepared.

But it looks as if it will have to wait until after the November presidential election in the US.

If President George W Bush is still in the White House when the votes are counted, the attack will quickly begin.

One of the main objectives will be to enable the promised elections in Iraq to take place in January.

But can Mr Bush afford to wait that long?

Another six weeks of hostage-taking and murder by al-Zarqawi and his allies?

That would be terrible for Iraq. And it could be very bad for Mr Bush's bid for re-election.
