Please contact anyone you can think of who may draw attention to this case. The link below provide emails for Colombian officials.

The Indigenous Councils of Northern Cauca, Colombia, report that Arquimedes Vitonas, mayor of Toribio, was kidnapped August 22, along with other indigenous leaders (Plinio Trochez, Gilberto Munoz, Ruben Dario) and their driver: Erminson Velasco. [1]

Indigenous leaders in Cauca have been targeted by all sides in Colombia's civil war. However, it appears at this point that the Colombian army, specifically the Battaliion Pichincha, are the most likely culprits. Battalion Pichinca has a track record of brutality in Cauca.

In February, the United Nations Development Program had awarded Toribio's 'Proyecto Nasa' a Sustainable Development Award [2]. Arquimedes Vitonas and Gilberto Munoz had been recognized as 'Masters of Wisdom' by UNESCO.

Please report on this case. International attention could lead to justice.

The mayor and others qho were kidnapped have been released unharmed.
It turned out to have been members of the FARC (leftist rebels) who had kidnapped them. Indigenous communities in the regioin were able to rescue them.

I should clarify that there rescue did not require violence and that all the international support they received helped convince the FARC to let them go.
