Israel's Sweden envoy attacks suicide bomber art

Israel's ambassador to Sweden was kicked out of Stockholm's Museum of National Antiquities after he destroyed an artwork featuring a picture of a Palestinian suicide bomber, news reports said.

The incident, widely reported in the Swedish media, occurred at the opening on Friday of the "Making Differences" exhibit, part of an upcoming international conference on genocide hosted by the Swedish Government and in which Israel is scheduled to participate.

"I was really looking forward to seeing what the artists had done. Instead, I was met by a picture of a smiling suicide bomber, the woman who killed 21 people in Haifa a few months ago," ambassador Zvi Mazel told Swedish news agency TT.

The art installation, located in the museum's courtyard, featured a fountain filled with red water, designed to look like blood.

A sailboat with the name Snow White floated on the water, and on it was a photo of a smiling Hanadi Jaradat, the female lawyer who blew herself up in the Haifa suicide bombing attack in October which killed 21 Israelis.

"For me it was intolerable and an insult to the families of the victims. As ambassador to Israel I could not remain indifferent to such an obscene misrepresentation of reality," Mr Mazel said.

Museum director Kristian Berg said the ambassador went berserk when he saw the piece.

"He pulled out the plugs and threw one of the spotlights into the fountain which caused the entire installation to short-circuit and made it totally life-threatening," he told TT.

One of the two artists who created the work, Dror Feiler, was to perform a piece of music but refused to do so as long as the ambassador remained at the scene.

"Ultimately we had to escort the ambassador out of the museum," Mr Berg said, adding that he did not consider the artwork to be a provocation.

"It is rather an invitation to think about why such things happen in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict," he said.

Museum artistic director Thomas Nordanstad said he had given the artists the go-ahead to create the artwork, and had "hoped it would lead to an artistic dialogue".

It was not immediately known whether the incident would affect Israel's participation at the "Stockholm International Forum - Preventing Genocide" conference, which is to take place January 26-28.

Yeah this was pretty funny. The ambassador looked totally insane. The artist's announcement that he's not going play unless the man who attacked his piece was removed from the reception received some applause from the other guests. And the ambassador just kept talking to himself...

The behaviour of the Israel's ambassador is not surprising.
A few months ago, in an art exhibition in Greece, Israel demanded the removal of an installation depicting the results of a woman suicide bomber's attack in a supermarket. When the gallery refused, they started to demand that the governement interferes! When they were reminded that the governement cannot do such a thing, all kinds of antisemetism accusations started to fly in the press and from the usual directions.
What is interesting in this and similar cases, is how the event is reported by various sources. Here is a small sample:

This is from the CNN website:

Quote:
"With this exhibition yesterday, they broke that understanding. Israel calls on the Swedish government to immediately remove the exhibit that glorifies the suicide attack."

Saranga said Israel's Foreign Ministry general-director for European affairs "has spoken with the Swedish ambassador [to Israel] and complained about the exhibit, adding that Israel sees the Swedish government as the element that must act to remove this exhibit and that Sweden cannot hide behind the excuse of freedom of speech as legitimization for attacks against Israel

They really don't seem to realise how ridiculous it is to ask the governments to interfere with these art pieces. Israeli diplomacy. Makes them look like total zealots. How many times have we seen this kind of thing? Similar things have happened with practically every European country. It's like they're in this perpetual state of defensive outrage and can't help it. "Attack against Israel"? Laughing

(although I really shouldn't laugh: maybe they'll decide to nuke Sweden...)

Snow White and The Madness of Truth
17/01 - 07/02
Plats: Historiska Museet

Installation

Quote:

Once upon a time in the middle of winter
For the June 12 deaths of her brother, and her cousin
and three drops of blood fell
She was also a woman
as white as snow, as red as blood, and her hair was as black as ebony
Seemingly innocent with universal non-violent character, less suspicious of intentions
and the red looked beautiful upon the white
The murderer will yet pay the price and we will not be the only ones who are crying
like a weed in her heart until she had no peace day and night
Hanadi Jaradat was a 29-year-old lawyer
I will run away into the wild forest, and never come home again
Before the engagement took place, he was killed in an encounter with the Israeli security forces
and she ran over sharp stones and through thorns
She said: Your blood will not have been shed in vain
and was about to pierce Snow White's innocent heart
She was hospitalized, prostrate with grief, after witnessing the shootings
The wild beasts will soon have devoured you
After his death, she became the breadwinner and she devoted herself solely to that goal
”Yes”, said Snow White, "with all my heart”
Weeping bitterly, she added: "If our nation cannot realize its dream and the goals of the victims, and live in freedom and dignity, then let the whole world be erased"
Run away, then, you poor child
She secretly crossed into Israel, charged into a Haifa restaurant, shot a security guard, blew herself up and murdered 19 innocent civilians
as white as snow, as red as blood, and her hair was as black as ebony
And many people are indeed crying: the Zer Aviv family, the Almog family, and all the relatives and friends of the dead and the wounded
and the red looked beautiful upon the white

Sharon praises 'art vandal' envoy

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has praised his ambassador to Sweden after he vandalised an art exhibit featuring a Palestinian suicide bomber.

Ambassador Zvi Mazel was ejected from a Stockholm museum after the incident.

Mr Mazel said the work, created by an Israeli-born artist, was "a call for genocide".

Israel has called on the Swedish Government to dismantle the exhibit, which has a boat floating in a pool of red liquid.

"I think the phenomenon [of anti-Semitism] is so serious that it would have been forbidden not to have acted on the spot," Mr Sharon said.

But the expatriate Israeli artist, Dror Feiler, rejected the criticism of his work, saying it had a message of openness and conciliation.

"I'm absolutely opposed to suicide bombers," he added.

Mr Feiler called the envoy "an intellectual dwarf" who had tried to "stop free speech and free artistic expression".

Sweden's foreign ministry has summoned Mr Mazel to give an explanation for his actions on Monday.

Ambassador Mazel was expelled from Stockholm's Museum of Antiquities on Friday after he threw a spotlight at the exhibit.

Called Snow White And The Madness Of Truth, the installation features a photo of Hanadi Jaradat, a 29-year-old trainee lawyer who blew up herself and 19 Israelis in a Haifa restaurant in October.

The work is accompanied by a piece of Bach music entitled My Heart Is Swimming In Blood.

The installation was commissioned ahead of a conference on genocide to be held later in January.

Mr Mazel was attending the opening of the exhibition

"I called our ambassador in Sweden Zvi Mazel last night and thanked him for his strength in dealing with increasing anti-Semitism, and told him that the entire government stands behind him," Mr Sharon told a cabinet meeting Sunday.

"I think Ambassador Mazel behaved in an appropriate way."

Israeli foreign ministry spokesman David Saranger had urged the Swedish Government to "take steps to remove it".

The director of the museum, Kristian Berg, said the installation would remain in place.

"You can have your own view of what this piece of art is all about, but it is never, never allowed to use violence and it is never allowed to try to silence the artist," he said.

Of course the real problem is not that the piece is "a call for genocide" or "an attack against israel", but the portrayal of Hanadi Jaradat as a human being. That's the whole source of the outrage: it's unbearable for someone with the mentality of the occupier. They, the israelis, need to be the ones telling the story, the palestinian experience *has* to be mediated by the occupiers. Things getting out of control like this scares the hell out of them. What provoked the ambassador's repressions was not the subject matter of the piece but the one intolerable detail - the human face of the suicide bomber.

Post Post subject: Israel's Embassy in Stockholm will be relocated Reply with quote

From the Jerusalem Post (formerly owned by Conrad Blank)

The Swedish landlord of Israel's Embassy in Stockholm has asked that the embassy be moved to a different location, Israel's Ambassador to Sweden, Zvi Mazel, told Israel Radio Monday morning.

The landlord told the diplomatic staff that the Israeli presence in the building poses a threat to the other residents of the building, according to the ambassador.

Israel's Embassy in Stockholm has been in the same building over 50 years.

Mazel said that the demand to relocate the embassy is part of "the general atmosphere of hostility towards Israel all around Europe - Sweden included."

Mazel caused a diplomatic stir when on Friday he unplugged three spotlights illuminating a display at the Museum of National Antiquities in Stockholm entitled "Snow White and the Madness of Truth."
