Dear Sir,

As a former Shell geophysicist, now involved in climate research, I
note that Lord Oxburgh's comments fit a long-standing pattern of
'greenwashing' propaganda: admit that there is a problem but move the
debate away from genuinely sustainable solutions that threaten the
power and profits of big business (Oil chief: my fears for planet',
17 June).

Oxburgh predictably plumps for the techno-fix, business-oriented
option of carbon sequestration "because I don't see any other
approach." Of course he doesn't; otherwise he wouldn't be sitting
where he is today. Like all industry chiefs, Oxburgh has a huge blind
spot that conveniently overlooks how state-corporate power is
relentlessly feeding a suicidal system of corporate globalisation.
Businesses and governments, and their friends in the media and the PR
industry, are fiercely resisting "other approaches" that are being
debated and developed by citizens, communities and grassroots
organisations around the world, but all largely ignored by the free
press.

It might be an uncomfortable thought for the the head of a giant oil
company, but whether dangerous climate change can be averted depends
upon whether today's corporate-shaped society can evolve into one
based on genuine democracy.
