This is a list of advertisers gleaned from the issues dated 15 and 19 February 2010. Obviously the addresses and emails need to be added, but hopefully it's a start, as I probably won't be able to do any more until later this weekend.

"“Independent News & Media has always understood that beyond being a very successful company in the financial sense, it has broader social responsibilities to all those communities where it operates. This is demonstrated by over 200 projects and charities which the company has underwritten and supported and can be seen from the work that INM has done in education, particularly the work they’ve done in health education in South Africa in relation to HIV and AIDS.”

Post Post subject: Sample Letter to Sponsors Reply with quote

Sample of a suggested first contact letter to key people amongst the Indie's advertisers --

Posted by Rhisiart Gwilym [User Info] [Email User] on February 20, 2010, 1:27 pm, in reply to "Great - thanks! I've never worked out how to use the forum ... (nm)"

Sample of a suggested first contact letter to key people amongst the Indie's advertisers --

--------------------------------------------

Dear --,

Greetings, hope all's well with you.

I write to draw your attention to a deeply disturbing article carried by a newspaper in which your [company/business/organisation] advertises.

The article in question is by Bruce Anderson, in the Independent, and is apparently endorsed by the editor, Roger Alton.

In this article, Anderson unequivocally asserts the necessity in some circumstances to torture not only people who are merely suspected of grave crimes, but also wholly innocent members of their family INCLUDING CHILDREN.

I append a link to this article so that you can see for yourself that this is no exaggeration.

http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/bruce-anderson/bruce-anderson-we-not-only-have-a-right-to-use-torture-we-have-a-duty-1899555.html

I'd like to ask whether you think that your [company/business/organisation] should really be sustaining with your advertising revenue a newspaper which endorses such shocking, and deeply-depraved ideas?

May I ask further whether you consider that it will benefit your [company/business/organisation] to be seen to be associating with and supporting such a newspaper?

With all due respect, may I suggest that it might be a good idea to withdraw your advertising from the Independent, or at least to contact them and make your disquiet known.

I hope you'll be good enough to drop me a brief line in answer to this query, and thanks most sincerely for your time and attention in this matter.

Cordially yours, ---

--------------------------------------------

The usual approach is for people wishing to join this kind of campaign to adapt the form letter to personalise it to themselves, or to write a wholly self-composed letter containing the same matter (even better, of course).

Already, there's enough experience accumulated of this kind of campaign to know that it works, sometimes strikingly well. It's often necessary to keep plugging away over time, like water dripping onto stone, but the effects do happen, even when they're not immediately apparent.

Always remember that the ultimate purpose is to cost the Indie substantial losses in revenue, by appealing to the decency of the people contacted not to support or endorse a shockingly wrong, deeply depraved proposal published in that paper. Tony and Gavin O'Reilly, and Dennis O'Brien (chieftains in the parent corporation) and therefore all their employees, will take serious note if that starts to happen.

I'll forward a copy of this letter to the O'Reillys and O'Brien, with covering explanation. And -- natch -- to Roger A.

As soon as enough names of key people amongst the advertisers have been amassed as per SHAC's methods, interested volunteers can begin the writing campaign.

I'll get back on that task myself as soon as get back in from my next upcoming job. But any help that anyone can put in will be greatly appreciated. See the SHAC reply to my enquiry, 8 threads down from this, for details of how they research their email-address lists.

Thanks to all who've contributed work already. This snowball is rolling. Let's cost the Indie some serious money!

This post copied to Tony O'Reilly, Gavin O'Reilly, Dennis O'Brien and Roger Alton.

Thank you for this thread. If you haven't seen me elsewhere on the forum, I am quite new to this type of advocacy, but your forum has helped me truly understand the viewpoints and rationale that I am aiming to stand for. This thread confirms some issues I ran in to way back when I was still at university. As an advertising account executive, why would you even want to put yourself in to this kind of situation where you are potentially supporting a cause viewed by many, including me, to be negative. This not only shows the poor work being done by the advertisers, but the overall lack of competency amongst its leaders and mid level executives alike.

It astounds me to see names like American Express, Audi, and Staples associated with this type of situation. WAKE UP!
